Pulling away from Palermo airport in a sporty white Audi, I’m shocked at the sight of the craggy mountains surrounding us. With hindsight the fact that Sicily is home to the indomitable Mount Etna should have given me some foresight but for the duration of our journey to coastal town Cefalu, I marvel at the vertiginous scenery.
Cefalu is the beginning of a three-centre adventure around the Italian island’s north and eastern coasts.
Prior to the trip other pre-conceived ideas cross my mind, some of which are realised, others that aren’t. Would we encounter erratic Italian driving? Yes, particularly when we pass a motorway exit where a queue has developed and watch as drivers pull on to the hard shoulder, then reverse back to the junction to avoid waiting. Would we inadvertently consume our body weights in moreish local food and wine? Every day.
Most of all my fiance Ollie and I discover an adventurous island with a happy balance of well-trodden tourist sites and unspoilt, rustic enclaves, all presided over by iconic monolith, Mount Etna, an active volcano that entices many visitors to Sicily’s shores.
According to David Skillicorn, general manager at Prestige Holidays, it is that adventurous element that makes Sicily a must-add to the tour operator’s programme.
“If there is talk of Etna erupting, bookings go up,” he tells me, not long after my September visit.
“It’s travellers not holidaymakers that want to visit places like Sicily.
“We have a huge focus on Croatia and wanted to go to the other side of the Adriatic but it’s a challenge to go into Italy as there are so many operators there. It’s why we decided to go to Sicily two years ago. It has performed really well, in terms of passenger numbers, Sicily is now number 3 in the Prestige Holidays top 10.”
