The facility in Gatwick’s North terminal includes an automated bag drop which is designed to reduce check-in queues.
The area covers more than 5,000 square metres including 48 self-service bag drop kiosks. EasyJet staff will be on hand to guide passengers to the automatic bag drop machines, which generate luggage tags that are then attached to the bags.
The new check-in area is part of easyJet’s move towards the consolidation of all its Gatwick flights in the North terminal from January 2017.
Sophie Dekkers, easyJet’s UK director, said: "As our largest base, Gatwick is of huge importance to easyJet both strategically and for the millions of our passengers who travel through the airport every year.
“We recognise that our customer’s airport experience is a crucial part of their overall journey and so we are delighted to have opened this new area for our customers flying from Gatwick.”
EasyJet is Gatwick’s biggest airline with 60 aircraft based at the airport flying on 106 routes. The airline is expecting to carry a total of 18 million passengers to and from Gatwick this year.
Chris Hope, easyJet’s head of Gatwick, added: “These new self-service kiosks provide a glimpse into the future of airport design and enable our customers flying from Gatwick to have unique use of the most innovative state-of-the-art facilities.”
