The passenger, Liam McKeown, 25, must pay the carrier the £5,200 cost of diverting the flight from Glasgow to Toulouse plus a £3,200 fine imposed by a Scottish court.
The court was told that McKeown had boarded the 7am flight drunk, had abused staff and punched windows and overhead lockers. His behaviour deteriorated despite an announcement from the captain and being handed a letter warning him about his conduct, The Daily Record reports.
An off duty police officer intervened before the flight was diverted. At Toulouse, he was kept in a cell for eight hours before being released and spent four days making his way home by coach.
The court was unable to impose a custodial sentence as the maximum penalty for breaching airways regulations is a fine. Jet2 said: “We hope that he has learned an important lesson and that the consequences of his actions send out a strong message that this behaviour will not be tolerated.”
