The FCO has added the advisory about potential attacks for visitors to both Sweden and Switzerland.
The advice reads: “There may be increased security in place over the Christmas and New Year period, including at Christmas markets and other major events that might attract large crowds; you should remain vigilant and follow the advice of local authorities.”
The same advice already applied to other popular Christmas market destinations including Austria, Belgium, Germany, France and Denmark.
In December 2016, 12 people were killed in Berlin when a lorry was driven into a crowd at a Christmas market in the German capital.
