Flights were diverted to other southern airports, including Stansted, Bournemouth and Southend, until the spare northerly runway could be brought into use.
The disruption had a knock-on effect into Monday morning, but the main runway has now been repaired. A Gatwick spokesperson said the airport was “returning to normal”.
“Some minor knock-on delays are occurring this morning while some of yesterday’s flights are accommodated in today’s schedule,” the airport said.
“Gatwick will continue to work closely with our airline partners and do everything possible to assist our passengers and get them moving. Gatwick would like to apologise to everyone affected by yesterday’s disruption.”
The airport advised passengers to check the status of their flight with their airline.
