The Advertising Standards Authority has upheld five complaints against Back Heathrow over the headline claim that followed a poll of 12,000 residents in 12 areas near the airport.
Back Heathrow had said that 60% of those polled wanted the airport to be expanded.
The ASA found that many respondents to a survey had expressed a neutral view and had been excluded from the sample, rendering the claim that most people supported expansion invalid.
The ASA concluded: “We considered the evidence held by Back Heathrow demonstrated only that 50% of all those polled were in support of expansion.” The ASA said the ad was misleading and that the claim could not be substantiated.
Back Heathrow was told not to repeat the claims “unless it held robust substantiation for them”.
