The Dutch city of Rotterdam has been chartering Volendam for up to 1,500 refugees from Ukraine since early April and has now extended this agreement with Holland America until 14 September.
The original charter of Volendam had been due to finish at the end of June but will now continue for another 10 weeks. As part of the agreement, the cruise line provides hot meals, private cabins, housekeeping services, laundry, use of public spaces, fitness facilities, internet access and other services.
As a result of the extended charter, Holland America is cancelling another six itineraries including trips to Norway, the British Isles and Mediterranean. Guests booked on these cruises will automatically be rebooked on similar itineraries and the line will contact them directly to explain their options.
Beth Bodensteiner, chief commercial officer of Holland America, said: “We are sorry for the inconvenience this will cause to guests booked on Volendam through the summer.
“We appreciate their continued understanding as we work with the city of Rotterdam on this important mission.”
Volendam is now due to resume its scheduled cruises with a 14-day Holy Land and Ancient Kingdoms Explorer cruise, departing from Venice on 24 September.
