The “Rijksmuseum at Sea” will be initially installed on its Oosterdam ship, during its scheduled drydock in April 2016 before being introduced across the fleet in the next few years.
The museum, which was founded in 1800, offers a representation of Dutch art and history, as well as European and Asian art from the Middle Ages to present day.
Some of the museum’s most famous masterpieces will be reproduced and shown in a dedicated space onboard, as well as throughout the ship.
Passengers will also be able to view videos about the museum and its collections on their in-stateroom TVs, while drawing classes will also be held. All will be free of charge.
Holland America Line’s president Orlando Ashford said: “Great works of art have always been the centre piece of our onboard décor, and we’re excited that this partnership with Rijksmuesum will add some spectacular reproductions to our collection of more than 1,300 pieces fleetwide.”
Meanwhile the line also revealed another new partnership last night – with microgreen specialist Koppert Cress, to grow fresh ingredients onboard the line’s newest ship Koningsdam, which launches in April.
The seedlings will take up to two weeks to grow before then being used in dinners in the ship’s Culinary Arts Centre, with the microgreens producing distinct flavours such as garlic, mustard and licorice.
