Temperatures have risen to above 40C across the Mediterranean from Spain to the Balkans in the worst heat wave since 2003.
The deaths have been spread across the area which has suffered damaged crops, wildfires and storms, The Times reports.
In Italy three people have died while many others have been treated for sunstroke and heat exhaustion with hospitals reporting an increase of admissions by up to 20%.
Deaths have also been reported in Romania, Majorca with another four hikers dying in the Alps from falling trees, lost footing and lightning as storms whipped the region.
Meanwhile, in the UK a toddler and his father were treated for hypothermia last week after visiting a beach in Wales without being properly prepared for the weather.
