Currently, passengers going to the airport by train have to disembark at Luton Airport Parkway, two miles and a 10-minute bus drive away.
However, that could change following the council’s approval of a £200 million 1.4 mile rail link and station that could also cut the train travel time to the airport top less than half an hour.
“It’s an exciting development which will enhance the passenger experience at Luton,” said Councillor Dave Taylor, chair of planning at Luton Council.
Luton Airport chief executive Nick Barton said: “Improving rail links is a crucial part of LLA’s development, and vital to ensure that we provide a fast and convenient experience for all our passengers.
"The creation of a fixed link between Parkway station and the terminal is a significant milestone in our current transformation and will speed up passengers’ journeys to and from the airport.
"We are currently working hard to implement more fast train services from central London, which will reduce passengers’ total journey time to less than thirty minutes.”
