Cashman, who is a co-founder of Stonewall, achieved fame in 1987 when his EastEnders character Colin Russell sparked controversy with the first gay kiss on national TV.
He later moved into politics, becoming an MEP and serving as Labour’s spokesperson on human rights, before being appointed to the House of Lords. In 2014 he was announced as Labour’s global envoy on LGBT issues worldwide.
