April 10, 2017 will be remembered as an auspicious day in Sandals Resorts’ history.
In what Karl Thompson describes as its “most exciting trade development since we opened our first resort 35 years ago”, Sandals is preparing to flick the switch on its own tour operation in the UK, and take bookings under its own Atol for the first time.
It’s a major departure for the Caribbean resort operator, which has previously partnered with Funway Holidays for a significant amount of its UK business, under Funway’s Atol.
But working more directly with travel agents is something the company’s UK and Europe managing director says agents have asked for for some time.
“Funway has been a great partner to us for 10 years, and it’s thanks to them we’ve had such success. But now we want to be in control of our own destiny,” he explains.
“We are the best-placed to come up with commercial opportunities via the trade, and it is agents who know the best way of getting to their own particular customers,” he continues. “Being in control of both the commercial and marketing message just makes sense.”
With an Atol to carry up to 20,000 passengers in its first year, the new operation will be launching at significant scale.
