The airport took to Twitter at 8.15am to report it was expecting delays of about 30 minutes “on all flights” following the incident.
However, recovery proved more difficult than anticipated with the aircraft finally out of harm’s way shortly before 10am.
A number of flights were diverted to neighbouring Bournemouth airport, including arrivals from Glasgow, Edinburgh and Amsterdam.
“The little bird is now out of the way and we are officially back in business,” said the airport in an update issued at 9.53am.
“For all the passengers waiting for their flights, please contact your airlines for updates. Thank you for your patience in this very peculiar situation.”
An image posted by the airport showed crews attending the aircraft’s rear-left wheel, with the emergency services on standby.
A video later showed the aircraft being wheeled away from the scene by a team of workers.
