The flooding was brought on by monsoon rains across southwestern portions of the country, according to Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Disaster Management, CNN reports.
As many as 99 people are missing, according to Sri Lanka’s Disaster Management Center, and the death toll is expected to rise.
Particularly affected is the district of Matara. There are reportedly still pockets where people are marooned, and rescue work is continuing.
The nearby Ratnapura district, 63 miles southeast of the capital, Colombo, had the highest death count of any area, with 79 deaths. The coastal belt of the Kalutara district has also been affected.
A spokesperson for Kuoni, which sells a lot of Sri Lanka product, said all Kuoni guests currently in the country had not been affected so far.
“For customers who are on driving itineraries, we’re working close with our local agents and the chauffeur guides, so we can amend itineraries if necessary.
“The heavy rain fall has been recorded in Ratnaputa district and in the coastal belt at Kalutara district which falls under the Sabragamuwa province.
“Certain intersects to the southern express wayhave been submerged and we have been notified of alternate routes.
“Our destination reps are in contact with all the guests.”
