Mountain rescue experts from the country’s Guardia di Finanza law enforcement agency said the three victims were from Germany, Italy and Belgium.
The trio were killed after the avalanche struck the Veny Valley near Mont Blanc, south-west of Courmayeur, close to 1pm on March 2.
Several other people from Italy, Germany and Belgium, were also injured, the alpine service of the Guardia di Finanza police said.
The group was reported to be skiing off-piste at the time when the avalanche occurred at Plan de la Gabba, the Daily Telegraph reports.
Italy’s national alpine rescue service (CNSAS) tweeted yesterday: “The number of victims has risen to three in the Veny Valley.”
Five of the injured, including two Italians and two Belgians, were dug out of the snow and flown by emergency helicopter to hospital in the city of Aosta.
Italian news agency ANSA reported that one of the injured skiers was placed in intensive care and is in a critical condition.
Two other people were caught up in a second avalanche in Colle San Carlo – around 100 miles north-west of Turin – at approximately 3pm yesterday but were not injured.
