The growing interest from fintechs highlights how travel connectivity has shifted from a niche add-on to an essential part of the modern travel experience. According to Alfonso Mata, head of strategy at Holafly, the entry of Monzo, Revolut and Starling into the market reflects the growing demand for travel connectivity:
“The entry of these digital banking giants into the travel eSIM space is a strong indicator of how travel connectivity is no longer simply a luxury – it has become essential to the modern travel experience.
“For years, UK travellers have faced a messy patchwork of post-Brexit roaming rules – where staying connected while on holiday can easily cost holidaymakers well over £100 in extra fees. Fintechs have recognised that high roaming costs and confusing daily passes remain a major friction point for travellers, which is why we're seeing them integrate connectivity directly into their apps. It speaks to the urgent demand for flexible, transparent connectivity.
“However, as raw data becomes commoditised across super-apps, the market is naturally segmenting. While banking add-ons excel at providing lightweight gigabyte bundles for quick trips, dedicated travel solutions naturally serve a different need. Modern travellers don't just want data allowances they have to track – they want continuous, worry-free connectivity throughout the entire travel journey.
“The reason is structural, not cosmetic. Digital banks don't own the telecoms infrastructure they sell – they license it from third parties. When connectivity fails mid-trip, the bank can't fix it; it can only relay the problem upstream. Specialised eSIM providers are vertically integrated, and that ownership is what makes the difference: network security, ad-blocking, virtual location and support that resolves issues rather than translates them. For heavy data users, specialised providers remain vital as they eliminate connectivity anxiety.
“Ultimately, the true differentiator in this new economic landscape isn't the technology itself, but the reliability and peace of mind built around it.”
