I believe you have to invest in your people – they’re the ones on the phone speaking to clients, so they have to be happy,” the new managing director of Titan says with a grin.
It is this ethos that led to the bright yellow sofa on which we are sat, and the pale grey walls sporting an arty silhouette of the Statue of Liberty – part of a makeover of the entire third floor of Titan’s HQ in Redhill, Surrey.
“Wait ’til you see the boardroom next door”, Andy Squirrell says. Intrigued, I take a look and am confronted with the vast blurred mural of a Tube train adorning an entire wall. It feels incongruous against the acres of green fields I can see through the adjacent windows. A London Underground sign with the words “Get on board” confirms this as the “London room”.
The office revamp, which also includes a huge modern kitchen and dining area, games room complete with air hockey, pool and table tennis table, a reading room and a TV area, was designed by finance director Vicki Harper and HR coordinator Sam Robinson, and kept as a surprise for the rest of the staff until it was unveiled in May.
For most new bosses, spending money on redecorating is unlikely to be a priority when taking the helm of a company. But Squirrell says it was a no brainer, insisting happy staff tend to lead to happy clients.
“We have a very engaged workforce here,” he says. “We maintain an open door policy and we want people to feel empowered and to not be afraid to make mistakes. This shows in what we get back from people.”
As testament to this, he reveals that two former employees returned to the business when it relocated its product and operations teams back to Redhill last year, following a three-year stint at Saga’s headquarters in Folkestone.
Squirrell, who has been with Titan since 2003, says the company is also proud of its focus on promoting people internally. He himself was first appointed commercial director in the wake of former managing director Jackie Willis’s departure in October 2015 – a role that Willis said at the time was a “stepping stone”, before Squirrell took on the mantle of managing director in March.
