Independent research has backed trade views that Croatia has crept up in popularity and the appeal of Turkey has fallen this summer.
Another key finding, that long-haul is becoming an increasingly popular family option, is also confirmed by intelligence from Sojern. Sojern compiles travel trends from “big data” based on the 350 million traveller profiles and billions of traveller intent data points it has access to.
Sojern’s ranking of UK customers’ intent to travel to certain destinations this summer versus last (June to August) places the traditionally less popular Croatia in ninth position. The country did not make the top 10 in Sojern’s listings last year.
Turkey has dropped two places to tenth position following a string of terror attacks and a failed political coup, while Turkish holiday hotspot Dalaman has dropped out of top 10 in the “destination city” and “short-haul destination city” categories.
Data from Travel Counsellors supports the success of Croatia, with the company reporting a 32% rise in popularity on last year. The agency, however, records Turkey as being down 46% on last year.
Global market researcher Euromonitor has also examined trends. Analyst Nadejda Popova said: “Fear factor among tourists and a high level of uncertainty are expected to shift the interest of travellers from Turkey to other destinations, which will now also include travel away from Europe. According to the latest UNWTO Barometer, international arrivals to Turkey have declined by 10% in Q1 2016.”
The trend for travel outside Europe is backed up by Sojern’s data, with New York entering the “top 10 destination city” list in sixth place, having not made it into the top 10 last year. Kuala Lumpur has also entered the top 10, while Bangkok has crept up two places to second position for long-haul.
