The hooded attacker reportedly demanded that workers open the safe and hand over the money, which included pounds and foreign currency, stashed inside, according to the Chester Chronicle.
He also had a female accomplice who waited outside the store during the raid.
A police hunt is now under way to try to find the culprits, with a helicopter called in to aid in the search.
Detective constable Gary Morris said: “We are currently following a number of lines of enquiry in relation to this incident.
“I’m keen to hear from who may have witnessed the incident take police or know the identity of the offenders.
“I’d also ask anyone who is offered foreign currency a low price by members of the public to contact us.”
Anyone with any information in relation to the incident is asked to call Cheshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 426 of August 11.
