The news comes just weeks after renewed debate over cruise tourism in Amsterdam, where anti-cruise campaigners have continued pushing for tighter restrictions on ships calling at the Dutch capital.
SJ Walker, Director of UK Sales at Virgin Voyages, said Northern Europe represented "the natural next step" following the success of the line's Alaska deployment.
Agents will have "more reasons to engage with existing sailors [passengers]", Walker explained, while opening Virgin Voyages to new customers seeking cooler-climate cruising and bucket-list experiences such as Arctic Circle sailings.
Longer shoulder season boosts European capacity
Valiant Lady will operate the inaugural season from 9 July to 4 September 2028, sailing from Amsterdam on voyages ranging from seven to 12 nights and including stopovers in Casablanca, Tangier, Bergen, Copenhagen, and Cherbourg, as well as an Arctic Circle crossing with midnight sun "deck party".
The cruise line will also increase European capacity by 16% compared with 2027 and by 41% versus 2026, driven by a longer April-to-October season, no scheduled dry dock and an expanded mix of week-long roundtrips and longer open-jaw itineraries.
Despite the increased investment in Europe, Walker revealed the Caribbean has become an increasingly important market for the brand, with market share increasing by 8% year on year. The uplift comes amid renewed instability in parts of the Middle East, which prompted some travellers to favour Caribbean holidays over Eastern Mediterranean sailings.
Virgin Voyages also reported strong trading performance through its travel agent network. Year-to-date revenue from First Mates, the line's travel agent programme, is up around 5%, while average per diem spend has increased by more than 20% as repeat guests spend more onboard. Average booking values have also risen by approximately 18%, reflecting demand for longer voyages.
Although bookings softened in May, Walker said June volumes had almost matched those recorded in January following the introduction of simplified promotions and fixed monthly net rates for agents.
"Our free balcony upgrade campaign has absolutely been one of our tried-and-tested firm favourites within the UK market," she added.
To support the Northern Europe launch, Virgin Voyages will introduce a dedicated trade incentive from 13 August to 30 September. Agents booking any of the six Northern European sailings will be entered into a prize draw to win a voyage for themselves and a guest, while also receiving double First Mate Loot payments worth £10 per booking.
Meanwhile, demand for the line's UK ship visits continues to grow. Virgin Voyages has increased capacity for its Valiant Lady Summer Tour 2026 from 1,000 to more than 1,200 travel agents after additional places sold out within four hours. The ship will host agent visits in Portsmouth, Dublin, Belfast, Liverpool and Edinburgh during August.
